The Grace in Confession of St. Augustine

The aim of this work is to outline Augustine's analysis of the doctrine of grace in his autobiographical work, Confessions and subsequently, to estimate the benefits of the concept of manifestations of grace in Confessions for the life of the Christian at the present time. In the first part, the socio-historical background of St. Augustine's life will be discussed followed by his biography and then will follow a brief treatise on Augustine's doctrine of grace. The second part introduces an outline of Augustine's Confessions. There will be a description of the work as a theological autobiography, its structure and its content. In the third part, the concept of manifestations of grace in Confessions will be elaborated, which will be followed by a reflection on the contribution of this concept to Christian life at present. Teresa of Avila and Augustinus: God inside

This thesis deals with the topic of God's presence in human's soul in the work of St. Teresa of Avila taking into account the same idea in St. Augustine's work. It situates the author in the context of social changes in the 16th century and then in the literary context. The latter is studied firstly from a diachronic point of view, as a tradition of mystic literature to which both Augustine and Teresa pertain, subsequently from the synchronic point of view, i.e. the Spanish mystic literature of the Golden Age. Also, it depicts the family environment of St. Teresa that led her to the spiritual literature and the chivalric romances, her entering in a monastery and the "second conversion", related to Augustine's Confessions. Afterwards, Teresa's production is described and especially her social position which required obedience towards authorities but also it allowed to share her opinions and enjoy her writing. It is of special interest that Teresa could reach the work of Augustine, originally written in Latin. Therefore, first her reading is presented as an aggregate including both spiritual and chivalric literature, then in particular the production of Augustine, to which Teresa referred only rarely but during the entire creative career. Speech act theory in the field of theology in Mark´s gospel speaking about Jesus as the Son of God

The purpose of this dissertation is to inquire into the application of the Speech act theory in the field of theology. First, philosophical part introduces distinctive topics of language-philosophy found in Wittgenstein, Austin and Searle. The main focus of this summary lies on Searle`s categorization of speech acts. If we approach Searle`s categorization from the perspective of Wittgenstein`s philosophy, we could understand his categorization in functional and not ontological terms and therefore we find a certain liberty to modify Searle`s categorization with regard to analysed phenomenon. In the beginning of the theological part we analyse the limits of the application of the speech act theory in the case of the confession of faith. Consequently we construct categorization of the speech acts of faith discourse based on its communicative and transformative dimensions. Afterwards we focus on one of the main types of faith discourse, namely the petitionary prayer. During analysis of the petitionary prayer in the Old and New Testament we gradually introduce considerable insights of theologians who applied Austin`s and Searle`s concepts in their work. These are followed up by our own observations. Second section of the theological part of the dissertation is concerned with the application of speech act theory in exegesis of particular texts, namely those passages in Mark`s gospel which speak about Jesus as the Son of God. Speech act theory evidently could not serve to settle exegetical disagreements by always locating the precise illocutionary point of every speech act, however it proves itself as a good tool for conceptual orientation and its application brings valuable insights.
